Festival of Sail (or, Fiasco of Sail, as MMSD employees have come to call it) has come to an end! It was great fun and I will post more about it whenever I can find the time. Which may not be for a while, as I have school this week, and then Dana Point’s festival next weekend. Will definitely post some time before the end of the month, though. For now, enjoy a few easy reblogs of cool stuff!
Sailing to Catalina this weekend! Ah, a refreshing break from school…
I’ll queue up some posts and then try to copy down my journal when I get back!
I’m back from Catalina! Dealing with a ten-hour school day right now; I’ll try to get my journal from the weekend posted tomorrow. In the mean time, however, have this video of a pod of whales we saw on the way back yesterday!
I realise that it is “tomorrow” and I have yet to post my journal from the weekend… This silly thing called “homework” came up, and then there was the Ship Modelers’ Guild (for which I edit the newsletter) meeting tonight.
So, for now, have a picture of what Californian looks like from the t’gallant yard. And I promise I will get my journal up sometime this weekend. Maybe.
Pictured: Californian crew, Star fore, main, and mizzen crew, Surprise fore and main crew.
Taking mast crew pictures is too mainstream. Surprise’s mizzen crew prefers to ironically eat pretzels and lounge on the vintage back porch.
Oh, mizzen. Never change.
You guys, I completely forgot about my box o’ stuff! That’s how exciting it is… Anyway, I’ll (try to) keep posting those every day in addition to any nautical things that come my way. Also a blog post coming up because I went “sailing” on Wednesday! (More on why “sailing” is in quotes later.)
This here is a piece of copper from Californian. It was once chafing gear on the port rail where we fish our anchor. Fun Stuff always happens when a 500-pound anchor is involved, and this chunk of copper got scraped off. So I kept it.
Spent yesterday and today continuing to reef out Californian’s quarterdeck. We’ve got all of port done now, and have gotten started on starboard. Filled a whole trash can with tar and oakum today… Hopefully we’ll be able to get the deck finished before any potential rain decides to make its way here.
Didn’t post yesterday. But it was a good Sunday working at the Museum! In the morning I helped wash down La Diana, a display fishing boat that lives on the barge. She’s sometimes referred to as Ginger, because she is accompanied by the Mary Ann. After that a few of us scraped down the varnish on Californian’s flag pole so it can be sanded and re-varnished. While we were doing this the main topmast went back up on Californian. She is no longer a ketch, huzzah! Since it was safe to wander on board the ship once the mast was back up, I continued reefing out the quarterdeck for the rest of the day. It was supposed to rain, and I haven’t paid any attention since to know if it actually did rain, but since the deck is far from finished we had to lay out some tarps so that the governor’s cabin wouldn’t fill with water…
