Yet another great weekend at the Maritime Museum! We had a lovely breeze for the sail on Saturday (video) which made for some good sailing. On Sunday maintenance Lori and I worked on painting some metal plates on Californian before hunting for the door to the great cabin on Surprise. We couldn’t find it anywhere, so that remains a mystery. I went sailing on Californian in the afternoon....

joilieder asked: It is a pleasant surprise that I find out that you work at the Maritime Museum. I posted the photo of HMS Surprise and plan on blogging both the Star of India and something else (not Californian I don't think). Maybe I should get my information from you before posting instead of depending on websites. Well, nice to "meet" you. Carol

The Beaufort Scale →
‘The other day out on the water, my crew-mate Alex and I were standing bow-watch together. We were looking out at the waves, and Alex asked what wind force I guessed it was. “I think seventeen knots. Twenty at most,” I said. He ran back to the helm where we have an anemometer, a wind gauge. “The anemometer says twenty-three but our speed downwind is 5. That makes it eighteen knots!” ...

nothinggmorenothingless asked: Hi! I found you by searching the Johnson tallships. My husband grew up working on the Irving and Exy with LAMI so I was pretty excited to find you! Anyway, I'm glad I found your blog.

Had another fantastic maintenance Sunday today. I spent all day working on Californian’s flagpole. I sanded it down in the morning, then varnished it in the afternoon. When I was about done sanding this adorable family with two little girls came by and the girls really wanted to help sand! I gave them a piece of 120 sandpaper, showed them how to go with the grain, and they had a blast! It...

sophistory: She was abreast of the point; she came smoothly to the wind, and her single carronade began to speak. Seventeen feeble puffs of smoke, and seventeen little bangs like damp squibs over the miles of deep blue sea; when the last faint yelp had died away, the flagship began her deep, full-throated reply, and at the same time another hoist ran up on shore. “Captain repair to flag, if you...

Whoops.
Didn’t post yesterday. But it was a good Sunday working at the Museum! In the morning I helped wash down La Diana, a display fishing boat that lives on the barge. She’s sometimes referred to as Ginger, because she is accompanied by the Mary Ann. After that a few of us scraped down the varnish on Californian’s flag pole so it can be sanded and re-varnished. While we were doing...

More reefing.
Spent yesterday and today continuing to reef out Californian’s quarterdeck. We’ve got all of port done now, and have gotten started on starboard. Filled a whole trash can with tar and oakum today… Hopefully we’ll be able to get the deck finished before any potential rain decides to make its way here.

Had an aloft-tastic day at the Museum! It was the first Sunday maintenance meeting since the holidays, and even though only two weekends were skipped, it felt like it had been forever. I started out taking holiday lights down on Surprise. We made sure to label everything, but that won’t prevent the confusion of putting them up next year. After finishing up with that I went over to the Star...

Not a boat-related post, I'm sorry!
You guys! My wonderful, lovely followers that I never expected to have, my blog is only 15 followers away from 100! I am in shock! I am in awe! I am proud! I am grateful! Thank you all so much for caring about the things I care about, reblogging, liking, everything! I promise I will do something special for my 100th follower. I don’t know what that will be. But it will be special! Maybe a...

More Inner Jib
Another day working on Californian’s inner jib. It was a bit easier today, and I got a lot more of the boltrope stitched to the sail, but I need to learn how to properly do a sailmaker’s eye splice. Of course the line I found is really difficult to splice. Oh, well. I’m taking a break tomorrow and Saturday, then going to the regular maintenance meeting on Sunday.
